Graduate Courses Permit Request Procedures for Fall 2008

Permit Request Policies for all Courses

  1. If you have not already done so, review the course descriptions and prerequisites or special requirements.
  2. If you are a student in one of the following Schools or Departments, you need to obtain permission from the appropriate person. Please request that they send an approval via email to Felicia Turner (felicia.turner@cetl.gatech.edu). If your department is not listed here, you do not need a departmental approval. No permits will be issued without the appropriate email approvals.

3.   No student may take more than two CETL courses per term.  Only one of the two courses can be a CETL language/communication course (8793, 8795, 8722, 8721, 8801).

Special Permit Request Policies for Language Courses (8721, 8722, 8793, 8795, 8801)

Each semester, the number of permit requests for these courses far exceeds the number of available seats. Please request a permit even if the course is full according to OSCAR.  Check OSCAR regularly after requesting a permit as students often drop the course before or during the first week of classes and then you can register.  Also, permit requests allow us to track demand for each course so that we can better meet the demand in the future. To ensure that we serve as many students as possible, the following special policies apply for our language courses (CETL 8721, 8722, 8793, 8795):

  1. Due to the nature of these courses, we cannot allow audits or give overload permits.
  2. If you have previously taken a CETL language course, or you enrolled and withdrew from a course, you may not request a permit for the same course within three semesters.
  3. Attendance on the first day of classes is mandatory unless you have permission from the course instructor.
  4. To pass a course (receive an “S”), a student may miss no more than 20% of the classes in a given semester. If you have a heavy travel schedule or a full schedule, consider taking the course during another semester.
  5. Discipline-specific sections of any course are restricted to students in that discipline only.
  6. For our writing courses (8721 and 8722), the instructors request that you be actively working on a writing project (i.e., article, thesis, dissertation) for your program.
  7. Students who enroll in CETL 8721 must be native or fluent speakers and writers of English. A short writing sample will be requested prior to issuing a permit.
  8. Students may only take one CETL language/communication course per term.

Special Permit Request Policies for GTA Training Seminar (8000)

  1. If you are in a discipline-specific section of CETL 8000 (e.g., CETL 8000-CHEM; CETL 8000-MAT), your graduate coordinator or the seminar instructor will automatically request a permit for you. You do not need to complete this form.
  2. If you are requesting a permit for a general section of CETL 8000, you should complete the permit request form and follow the permit request policies outlined above.
