Steal an Idea--Pass the URL--Join the Discussion!

Date: October 18 , 2007
Time: 11 am - 1pm
Location: Wilby Room, GT Library and Information Center
Lunch is provided.

Many of us teach as we were taught because we are not aware of alternatives. But there’s no need for each instructor to reinvent the education wheel—we simply need to gather ideas, “steal” the ones that have potential for us, and share what we do to improve student learning with our colleagues at Georgia Tech.

To jumpstart your thinking, take a look at 34 ideas that Joe Ben Hoyle, accounting professor and David Meade White Distinguished Teaching Fellow at the University of Richmond, has posted at http://oncampus.richmond.edu/~jhoyle/. Hoyle claims that he “carefully stole from the best,” and he encourages you to do the same. (Check out his collection of one-page essays on topics such as “Solidifying Jello Knowledge,” using the “50-50 Rule,” and “Learning to Fly a 747 Jet.”)

Next, pass the URL to a colleague who also might be interested in considering some innovative ideas about teaching and learning—and register to participate in a luncheon discussion of “best practices.” (Encourage your colleague to register too!) Then join your Georgia Tech colleagues on October 18th to talk about practical strategies (both Hoyle’s and yours) that can make a difference in the work we do with students.

Teach, Test, and Hope for the Best???

Date: September 20, 2007
Time: 11 am - 1pm
Location: Wilby Room, GT Library and Information Center
Lunch is provided.

What students gain from a course often depends on the quality of its design.  If you want to increase the odds that students in your classes are learning, consider shifting from the questions that have traditionally guided our actions  (What should I teach—and in what order should I teach it? How difficult should I make the exams?  What grades should I give?) to a curricular design process that puts student learning at the forefront and is applicable across disciplines.  In this workshop we’ll consider the important questions related to course design and how to apply this framework to the courses you teach.  Come prepared to roll up your sleeves and work on designing (or re-designing) a module in one of your courses or a course you’d like to teach.
