CETL/BP Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award

With the continuing support of BP America, CETL has honored outstanding Teaching Assistants since 1992. The CETL/BP Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award is the only institute-wide award for Teaching Assistants and symbolizes Georgia Tech’s commitment to promoting exemplary teaching. The award has two overarching goals:

  • To formally reward outstanding contributions made by teaching assistants in supporting Georgia Tech’s mission in undergraduate education
  • To provide visible incentive for all TAs to exhibit excellence in undergraduate instruction

Timeline:

  • Early January: Call for Nominations
  • First Monday of February: Deadline for departmental nominations to CETL
  • Late March: CETL Luncheon for nominees and departmental representatives
  • Early April: Georgia Tech Student Honors Day and Presentation of Awards

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible, each nominee must:

  • Be a current Georgia Tech graduate or undergraduate student at the time of nomination.
  • Have served as a teaching assistant (or other similarly defined instructional role) for at least two semesters at Georgia Tech at the time of nomination.
  • Be nominated by a faculty or staff member (or group of faculty or staff) who has thorough, first-hand knowledge of the TA’s teaching experience. Departments may develop their own criteria for the selection of their nominee; however each department may only select a single nominee.

NOTE: Previous departmental nominees may be re-nominated provided that they have served as a Teaching Assistant since the time of the last nomination. Previous winners of the award, however, may not be re-nominated.

Nomination Process:

Nomination information is sent to all academic units early in Spring Semester. Each department may nominate only one outstanding Teaching Assistant. A committee comprised of faculty from across the campus is convened by CETL to choose the winners. All nominees are honored at a reception hosted by CETL, and the winners are recognized at Georgia Tech’s Student Honors Day in April where they receive a cash award and certificate.

Any department or academic unit that utilizes Teaching Assistants (or other similarly defined instructional roles) are strongly encouraged to select a nominee to be honored at this event.
