Each year, The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) celebrates the contributions to teaching excellence at Georgia Tech made by our graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants. The annual awards process opens in January. CTL asks all schools/departments to conduct an internal competition to produce one person in each of the following categories, where applicable: (1) Graduate Student Instructor of the Year; (2) Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year; (3) Undergraduate Teaching Assistant of the Year; (4) Online Head Teaching Assistant of the Year (**NEW**); and (5) Online Teaching Assistant of the Year (**NEW**). Each school-level winner will be invited to submit an application to participate in the institute-wide TA of the Year competition. All recipients of school/department awards will be honored and the campus-wide winners will be announced at the annual TA and Future Faculty Awards Day.
New TA Awards Categories!
This annual TA Awards cycle we are offering two new categories of awards to recognize the contributions of teaching excellence from Georgia Tech's online TAs: Online Head Teaching Assistant of the Year and Online Teaching Assistant of the Year. CTL welcomes all schools/departments at Georgia Tech to produce one teaching assistant in each of these categories, where applicable. The qualifications for these categories are listed below.
- Online Head TA Award: Current student who worked as a head online teaching assistant in a fully-online course* at least one term during the award year.
- Online TA Award: Current student who worked as an online teaching assistant in a fully-online course* at least one term during the award year.
*Courses are considered fully online when all or nearly all of the class sessions are delivered via web-based technologies. Generally, if at least 95% of class time is spent online, a course is considered fully online. These courses do not require students to travel to a classroom for regular instruction; however, the course might require students to travel to a site to attend an orientation, to take exams, or similar activities. This award does exclude hybrid or flipped-classroom courses where students are required to meet with instructors or TAs at a physical location on a regular basis.
TA and Future Faculty Awards Day Ceremony
At this annual event, Georgia Tech celebrates the teaching assistants who receive school- and institute-wide awards. We also recognize the participants of our future faculty program who have completed Tech to Teaching and CIRTL teaching certificates. Student and postdoc Thank-a-Teacher recipients are acknowledged for the valuable contributions they make to the Georgia Tech learning environment. Finally, this event is a perfect time to show our appreciation for the graduate students who contribute to CTL programming through our Fellowship program. Faculty and staff are invited to help us celebrate all of the honorees.
All award winners, teaching certificate recipients, and Thank-a-Teacher recipients will be sent an invitation to register for the awards event once the nomination process has been completed.
