Dr. Satish Kumar is an associate professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering and former Class of 1969 Teaching Fellow. Dr. Kumar’s teaching philosophy is to keep students highly motivated to acquire engineering skills while making their educational experience as stress-free as possible. In his 10 years teaching at Georgia Tech, he finds that creating an environment, which can help students to be motivated, become independent and critical thinkers, while keeping the stress level low is quite challenging. Dr. Kumar believes teaching policies, instruction tools and methods of delivery should be adaptable to the needs of students. He is driven by several important pedagogical questions:
What teaching methods can promote independent and critical thinking, and what are the alternate ways to present complex concepts? What classroom environment will enable friendly cooperation among students, and what will make them comfortable in asking questions and participating in class?
